Benefits of Soil Aeration

When we carry out topdressing or lawn seeding, soil aeration allows for better absorption of topsoil, improved assimilation of nutrients, and more effective uptake of seeding fertilizer (chicken manure).

Proper core aeration enables the lawn to become denser (formation of new stolons) and more resistant to disease, insects, and periods of drought.

This service provides effective aeration covering approximately 5% to 7% of the soil surface, promoting improved circulation of air, water, and nutrients.

Decompaction encourages deeper root development, improving lawn establishment. It also stimulates natural soil aeration activity by organisms and microorganisms present in the soil.

Soil aeration is highly effective when the soil is compacted, clay-based, or silty. It is less effective in sandy soils.

Decompacting for a Beautiful Lawn

Soil compaction is a common issue that prevents lawns from becoming green, dense, and healthy. A well-aerated soil optimizes the balance between soil, air, and water.

The first step we take before performing lawn aeration is a thorough analysis of soil characteristics. To accurately determine soil composition, we collect samples using a soil probe.

Visual indicators are also considered. In shaded areas, compacted soil is often identified by the presence of weeds or poor water infiltration during rainfall. In sunny areas, the presence of dandelions, plantain, and quackgrass often indicates soil compaction.

Additional signs of excessive compaction include sparse turf density, the soil’s history (previous interventions), and usage patterns (heavy foot traffic).

When Should Lawn Aeration Be Performed?

There are two ideal periods during the year for soil aeration: April, May, or June, as well as September or October.

Generally, soil aeration should be done every two years. However, for heavily used properties, annual aeration is recommended.

Soil aeration should be avoided during drought conditions, when dandelions are in the “fluffy” stage, or when wild strawberry plants are abundant.
